No. 01 Missing the Point
Straw Man
In Turkish: İddiayı Zayıflatma Safsatası
You didn’t beat my argument. You beat the one you made up. Congratulations.
I’m thinking we ease off the anchovies at dinner. Veggie nights, twice a week.
Oh, so anchovies are banned now and Hasan the fisherman starves. Is that it?
He said “twice a week”, Dursun. You added the fisherman.
What is it?
Restating someone’s claim as something sillier, more extreme or weaker, then knocking that version down. The real claim is still standing. You punched a scarecrow.
The pattern
- A says X.
- B rewrites X as X*, which is easier to beat.
- B refutes X*.
- B: “See? A was wrong.”
Why it fails
Nobody said the thing that got refuted. X still hasn’t been answered. It works because the audience often misses the swap, and because burning a scarecrow is easier than dealing with a real argument. It still wins nothing; it changes the subject.
How to spot it
- The claim being answered is more extreme or sillier than the one that was made.
- It starts with “so what you’re saying is…” and ends with something you didn’t say.
- Amplifiers got added: everyone, always, completely, all of us.
What to say
A calm correction is enough: “That’s not what I said. What I said was [repeat the claim word for word]. What do you make of that?” Don’t argue the distorted version; the moment you do, the scarecrow is yours.
When it’s not a fallacy
Checking your understanding (“if I’ve got you right, you’re saying… is that it?”) isn’t a straw man; it’s the opposite. The fallacy is pressing on with the distortion and claiming victory. Drawing out a claim’s real consequences isn’t distortion either, as long as the consequence genuinely follows.
Examples
- FamilyYou say “tidy your room”. The teenager hears “you want a military barracks”.
- Work“Let’s shorten meetings” comes back as “so you want to stop communicating entirely”.
- Social mediaUnder “this film felt a bit long”: “Guess you know nothing about cinema; everyone wants a 90-minute TikTok now.”
- Football“The coach picked the wrong lineup today” gets “why are you trashing the man who won us the cup?”
